Sitting across from the temple treasury, he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. Summoning his disciples, he said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had —all she had to live on.” Mark 12:41-44, CSB
Two hand-carved sparrows take flight on either side of an ancient biblical coin known as the "widow's mite" or the "prutah," set in the center as a signet. Where scripture cites the use of the word "penny" in both Matthew 10 and again in Mark 12, the coin Christ was actually referring to was the prutah, a bronze token of small value and very small size, minted in massive amounts during a biblically and historically significant period in Judea.
Surrounding the imagery of sparrows in Matthew 6 and 10 is a context of our natural inclination toward fear contrasted with God's enduring faithfulness. The reminder that these humble birds usher in on the whisper of their wings is, "Fear not. Do not be afraid. You are seen and known. You are beloved."
If the smallest of creatures paired with the smallest monetary value of the widow's mite has the attention of our God, how much more do we as his Beloved? You are seen when no one else is looking; the eyes of the Father are on you. He knows what you need. He sees you giving your everything, even when what you have to give is inextricably small, next to nothing. You give out of smallness but He gives from never-ending abundance. Beloved, wear this tangible reminder of His faithfulness and remember: You are worth more than many sparrows.
